1. An attack that overwhelms a target's network, service, or application using traffic or requests generated from many distributed systems at once. The distributed nature makes simple blocking harder because the flood comes from numerous sources instead of one host.

   In plain English: An attack where many systems flood a target so it cannot serve normal users.

   Example: "The site stayed down for hours under a distributed denial of service attack sourced from compromised IoT devices."
