Port Forwarding

Definitions

1. The redirection of traffic arriving on one port to a different internal host, service, or port, often through a router, firewall, SSH tunnel, or NAT device. Port forwarding is useful operationally, but it can also expose internal services unexpectedly or create bypass paths around intended controls.

   In plain English: Redirecting traffic from one network port to another system or service.

   Example: "The incident began with forgotten port forwarding that exposed an internal admin interface directly to the internet."
