The process of altering data so individuals can no longer be identified from it, directly or through practical linkage attacks. Strong anonymization is hard because simply removing obvious identifiers often still leaves enough clues for re-identification.
In plain English: Changing data so it no longer identifies real people.
Example: "The dataset needed real data anonymization, not just email removal, before it could be shared externally."
