1. The identification of traffic coming through proxies, VPN exits, anonymizers, or relay infrastructure instead of directly from the originating user or system. Proxy detection is often used in fraud prevention, abuse control, and account-risk scoring, though sophisticated actors can still blend into residential or mixed networks.

   In plain English: Figuring out whether traffic is coming through a proxy or relay service.

   Example: "The sign-in was challenged because proxy detection classified the source IP as a recently abused residential relay."
