Proxy Authentication

Definitions

1. The process by which a proxy server verifies the identity of the user, device, or service before forwarding traffic on its behalf. Proxy authentication is used to apply policy, auditing, and outbound restrictions based on who is making the request rather than just where it came from.

   In plain English: Authenticating a user or system before a proxy allows traffic through it.

   Example: "The web gateway required proxy authentication so outbound browsing policy could differ for contractors, employees, and privileged admins."
