Outbound Filtering

Definitions

1. The inspection and restriction of traffic leaving a network or system to prevent data exfiltration, malware callbacks, and unauthorized external communication. Outbound filtering is a key but often underused control because many environments focus mostly on inbound defense.

   In plain English: Restricting what traffic can leave a system or network.

   Example: "Outbound filtering stopped the malware from reaching its command server even though the initial phishing attachment had executed."
