  1. A safeguard or process put in place to reduce the likelihood or impact of a particular risk. Risk controls may be preventative, detective, corrective, or compensating depending on what part of the risk they are meant to influence.

    In plain English: A safeguard used to reduce a specific risk.

    Example: "Segmenting the admin interface behind a bastion host was treated as the key risk control until the vulnerable service could be rewritten."
