1. The foundational hardware, operating system, runtime, or service layer on which applications are built and executed. Depending on context, it can mean an OS (Linux, Windows), a runtime (JVM, Node.js, .NET), a cloud provider (AWS), or a product ecosystem (iOS, Salesforce) that provides APIs for developers to build upon.

   In plain English: The underlying system or environment that software runs on and builds upon, like the operating system or cloud service.
