Definitions

1. A threat that originates outside the organization or trusted environment, such as criminal groups, nation-state operators, internet attackers, or hostile contractors with no internal role. The term is often used in contrast to insider risk when scoping a threat model or response path.

   In plain English: A threat that comes from outside the organization rather than from insiders.

   Example: "The evidence pointed to an outside threat because there was no sign the activity used legitimate internal privileges before exploitation."
