Artificially generated data that mimics the statistical properties of real data without containing actual personal or sensitive information. Used to augment training sets, protect privacy, test systems, and address data scarcity in regulated industries.
In plain English: Fake data generated by algorithms that looks and behaves like real data, useful when real data is scarce or sensitive.
Example: "We trained the fraud model on synthetic transaction data — same statistical distribution as real data but no PII concerns."
