Sprint Velocity

Definitions

  1. The average number of story points (or units of work) a team completes per sprint, used for forecasting future capacity. Should stabilize over time as estimation calibrates. Misuse: comparing velocity between teams (different estimation scales), using it as a productivity metric (incentivizes point inflation), or demanding velocity increase sprint over sprint.

In plain English: How much work a team typically finishes in one sprint, used to predict how long future work will take.

Example: "Our velocity is 34 points per sprint -- with 55 points remaining, we need about 2 more sprints. Don't compare our velocity to Team B's."
