  1. The process of gathering information about a target's people, infrastructure, technologies, or defenses in preparation for a later attack or assessment. Reconnaissance can be passive, such as OSINT, or active, such as scanning and direct probing.

    In plain English: Gathering information about a target before an attack or security test.

    Example: "The campaign began with reconnaissance against the company's exposed domains, employee naming patterns, and third-party login portals."
