1. A message sent from a server to a user's device without the user actively requesting it. Delivered via platform services like APNs (Apple), FCM (Google), or WNS (Microsoft). Powerful for engagement; infamous for abuse. The line between 'useful alert' and 'spam' is thin.

   In plain English: A pop-up message that appears on your phone from an app, even when you are not using it — like a tap on the shoulder from an app saying 'hey, look at this.'

   Example: "We A/B tested push notifications: one relevant alert per day increased retention 23%. Three per day increased uninstalls 40%."
