1. A tool used during authorized security testing to discover assets, exploit weaknesses, capture traffic, crack credentials, or validate security controls. Pentest tools range from scanners and proxies to exploitation frameworks and custom scripts, and the same tools may also be abused by attackers.

   In plain English: A tool used to help carry out a penetration test.

   Example: "The consultant wrote a custom pentest tool for the proprietary protocol because off-the-shelf scanners could not speak it."
