1. The nonprofit organization that stewards the Open Source Definition and approves licenses as open source under that framework. The OSI plays a central role in disputes over source-available terms, ethical licenses, and what counts as open source.

   In plain English: The organization that defines and approves what counts as open source licensing.

   Example: "The company stopped calling the license open source once the Open Source Initiative made clear it would not qualify."
