  1. Being designated to respond to production incidents outside business hours. On-call rotation is the price of running things in production. The PagerDuty alert at 3 AM is the modern equivalent of the bat signal, except Batman is groggy and in pajamas.

    In plain English: Being the person who has to answer their phone and fix problems if something breaks at night or on weekends.
