Definitions

1. An internal conceptual map of how something works, used to predict behavior, explain failures, and make decisions. Strong engineers often differ less in syntax knowledge than in the quality of their mental models.

   In plain English: The simplified understanding in your head of how a system works.

   Example: "Your mental model of transactions is off, which is why the race condition feels surprising."
