Definitions

1. An exploit that requires code execution or account access on the target system already, typically to escalate privileges, escape restrictions, or gain persistence. Local exploits are especially important after initial access because they often turn a limited foothold into full compromise.

   In plain English: An exploit that only works after someone already has access on the machine.

   Example: "The attacker used a local exploit to move from an unprivileged shell to root on the server."
