Definitions

1. A well-automated area that sits isolated inside a broader sea of manual or inconsistent process. In engineering slang, islands of automation are useful but frustrating because they highlight how much surrounding work is still primitive.

   In plain English: An isolated area of good automation surrounded by mostly manual process.

   Example: "The deploy pipeline was an island of automation inside an otherwise manual release process full of copy-paste notes and human checklist steps."
