Definitions

Short for intrusion prevention system, a security control that inspects traffic or activity and actively blocks behavior matching malicious patterns or policy violations. Unlike a passive IDS, an IPS sits in the enforcement path and can stop attacks in real time.
In plain English: A system that detects and blocks suspicious network activity automatically.
Example: "The IPS dropped the exploit traffic before it reached the vulnerable server."
