Full Disk Encryption
Noun · Security & Infosec
Definitions
Encryption of an entire storage device so that data cannot be read without the proper key or authentication during boot or unlock. Full disk encryption protects lost or stolen devices particularly well, but it does not stop an attacker already running code on an unlocked system.
In plain English: Encrypting everything on a drive so the device's data stays protected if the hardware is lost or stolen.
Example: "The laptop was stolen, but full disk encryption kept the local files unreadable without the recovery key."
