The ongoing expansion of a product's features beyond its original purpose, often driven by market pressure, competitive anxiety, or a PM who keeps saying 'just one more thing.' Synonym of scope creep but focused on product features.
In plain English: When a product keeps getting new features added until it becomes bloated and confusing — trying to do everything instead of doing one thing well.
Feature creep is a major contributor to project delays and software bloat. Each individual feature request seems reasonable, but their cumulative effect is a product that tries to do everything and does nothing well. The antidote is a clear product vision and the courage to say no.
Example: 'We started building a to-do app. Feature creep turned it into a project management platform with Gantt charts, time tracking, and an AI assistant. We still don't have a good to-do list.'
