  1. The process of converting ciphertext back into readable plaintext using the correct key and algorithm. If decryption is possible for an attacker, confidentiality has effectively failed even if the data was encrypted originally.

    In plain English: Turning encrypted data back into readable data.

    Example: "The investigators had the captured traffic but needed the session keys before decryption was possible."
