1. A data environment so messy, inconsistent, and poorly governed that deriving trustworthy meaning from it becomes slow and frustrating. In engineering slang, a data swamp is what happens when storage grows faster than structure and stewardship.

   In plain English: A messy poorly governed data environment that is hard to use well.

   Example: "The lake project had slipped into a data swamp, full of duplicated events and stale tables nobody trusted enough to delete."
