1. A cryptographic design principle, popularized by Claude Shannon, referring to making the relationship between key and ciphertext as complex and unintuitive as possible. Confusion helps prevent attackers from deriving key structure from observed outputs.

   In plain English: A cryptographic property that makes the link between the secret key and output hard to understand.

   Example: "The cipher relied on both diffusion and confusion to make statistical attacks harder."
