1. A message generated by an entity seeking a certificate, containing identifying information and a public key for the certificate authority to sign. The CSR is a standard input in certificate issuance workflows.

   In plain English: A request sent to a certificate authority asking it to issue a certificate for a public key.

   Example: "The appliance generated a certificate signing request that the internal CA signed for mTLS use."
