  1. Describing the part of a web page visible without scrolling, borrowed from newspaper layout language. In web culture, the phrase is used when discussing what content, calls to action, or branding should appear immediately on load.

    In plain English: Visible on the page before the user has to scroll.

    Example: "Marketing wanted the signup button above the fold, while product argued that new visitors first needed a clearer explanation of what the tool actually did."
