1. The objective function or goal that training is trying to optimize, such as next-token prediction, classification accuracy, or reward maximization. The training objective strongly shapes what capabilities and failure modes emerge.

   In plain English: The target that the training process is trying to optimize.

   Example: "They changed the training objective after finding that the old setup rewarded confident answers more than accurate ones."
