1. The process of handing responsibility, context, or leadership from one person or team to another. In engineering slang, torch passing goes well only when it includes real transfer of understanding, not just documentation links.

   In plain English: Passing responsibility or knowledge from one person or team to another.

   Example: "The maintenance handoff needed actual torch passing sessions, because the runbook alone did not explain the strange recovery tradeoffs."
