Definitions

1. A senior individual contributor role above senior engineer, focused on cross-team technical leadership without direct reports. Staff engineers set technical direction spanning multiple teams, solve ambiguous problems, mentor tech leads, and create leverage through architecture decisions, tools, and standards. Will Larson's 'Staff Engineer' book codified four archetypes: Tech Lead, Architect, Solver, and Right Hand.

   In plain English: A very senior programmer who leads technical direction across multiple teams without being a manager.

   Example: "The staff engineer doesn't own one team's backlog — she identified that three teams were building similar auth systems and designed a shared platform."
