1. The ongoing practice of cleaning, refactoring, documenting, and gently improving software over time. In engineering slang, software gardening is the opposite of waiting for total chaos before acting.

   In plain English: The regular habit of maintaining and gradually improving software.

   Example: "Friday afternoons became software gardening time, which slowly reduced the number of tiny messes turning into expensive problems."
