sidechain
/SIDE-chayn/ · noun · Development · Origin: 2014
Definitions
An independent blockchain that runs parallel to a main chain (layer 1), connected by a two-way bridge that allows assets to move between them. Sidechains can use different consensus rules, enabling faster or cheaper transactions while periodically settling back to the more secure main chain. Security depends on the sidechain's own validator set.
In plain English: A separate, smaller blockchain that runs alongside a main one. You can move your tokens over to it for faster or cheaper transactions, then move them back.
Example: The game moved its item trading to a sidechain where transactions cost fractions of a cent, bridging back to Ethereum only for high-value sales.
