Origin Story

Guy Steele and Gerald Jay Sussman created Scheme at MIT in 1975 as a dialect of Lisp. They originally named it **Schemer**, after the AI languages Planner and Conniver, but the ITS operating system limited filenames to six characters, so it was truncated to **Scheme**.
Scheme's philosophy was radical minimalism: instead of Lisp's many special forms, Scheme had a tiny core that could express everything through **lambda calculus**. It introduced lexical scoping and first-class continuations to the Lisp family.
Scheme became the language of *Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs* (SICP), MIT's legendary introductory CS textbook used from 1985 to 2008. Generations of programmers cut their teeth on Scheme's parentheses, learning recursion and abstraction from the ground up.
