1. A service that authorizes and processes credit card and digital payments for online merchants, acting as the intermediary between the customer, the merchant, and the acquiring bank. Stripe, PayPal, and Adyen are leading examples.

   In plain English: The middleman service that securely handles credit card transactions when you buy something online — it talks to your bank so the website does not have to.
