Partial Encryption

Noun · Security & Infosec

Definitions

  1. A technique in which only part of a file, dataset, or storage volume is encrypted instead of the whole thing, often to reduce processing time while still causing disruption. Partial encryption is common in modern ransomware because it can break access quickly without fully encrypting every byte.

In plain English: Encrypting only part of something instead of all of it, often to save time while still causing damage.

Example: "The ransomware used partial encryption on large virtual disk files so it could disable key systems before detection triggered."
