  1. Running a processor, memory, or graphics card above its rated clock frequency to gain performance the manufacturer did not guarantee. Because switching power scales with frequency and with the square of voltage, and higher clocks usually need more voltage, modest frequency gains produce disproportionate increases in heat, which is why serious overclocking is fundamentally a cooling problem addressed with large air coolers, liquid loops, or in extreme cases liquid nitrogen. Stability is not binary: an overclocked system may pass hours of synthetic load and still corrupt data under a different pattern, so validation uses varied stress tests over long periods. Vendor binning means identical models vary in headroom, producing the 'silicon lottery'. Modern boost algorithms now capture much of the available margin automatically, narrowing the gains once available.

    In plain English: Pushing a computer chip to run faster than the manufacturer says it should, like driving a car above its recommended speed limit. You get more performance but risk overheating or crashes.
