  1. A factor-of-ten difference used to express rough scale comparisons. In engineering estimation, saying something is 'an order of magnitude faster' means roughly 10× faster, and the term is used broadly to communicate that two quantities are in fundamentally different ballparks rather than quoting precise numbers.

    In plain English: A roughly tenfold difference in size or speed, used to show that two things are on completely different scales.
