Legacy Protocol

Definitions

1. An older communication protocol that remains in use for compatibility but often lacks modern security properties such as strong encryption, mutual authentication, or safe negotiation. Legacy protocols create disproportionate risk because their weaknesses are well understood and hard to compensate for fully.

   In plain English: An older protocol still in use even though it no longer meets modern security expectations.

   Example: "The environment still allowed the legacy protocol for one old scanner, which opened an avoidable downgrade path."
