Definitions

1. A token consumed as part of the input to an AI model, counting toward context limits and often toward cost. Input tokens include prompts, instructions, retrieved context, conversation history, and any user-provided content sent with the request.

   In plain English: A token that belongs to the input side of an AI request.

   Example: "The team tracked input token growth because the retrieval layer was quietly adding too much background text to each call."
