Herding Cats

Definitions

1. A metaphor for the difficulty of coordinating highly independent people, especially engineers with strong opinions, competing priorities, or specialized ownership. In tech management it often describes the challenge of alignment rather than lack of competence.

   In plain English: Trying to coordinate a group of very independent people.

   Example: "Cross-team architecture work feels like herding cats unless the interfaces are clear."
