Definitions

1. To reduce attack surface and improve resistance to compromise by tightening configuration, removing unnecessary components, limiting privileges, and enabling security controls. Hardening is an ongoing process, not a one-time checklist item.

   In plain English: To make a system more secure by locking it down and reducing unnecessary risk.

   Example: "Before exposing the server, we need to harden it by disabling unused services and locking down admin access."
