1. An exclamation of surprise, dismay, or bafflement, uttered on encountering something that makes no sense, such as a stack trace pointing into code that cannot possibly have run. Gurfle occupies the register between mild annoyance and genuine alarm, and is characteristically directed at a situation rather than a person. It belongs to the Jargon File's set of invented interjections, alongside 'foo' and 'bletch', whose function is to register an emotional reaction without profanity, a convention shaped by decades of communication over shared, logged, and very public terminals.
