1. A long-running program that funds contributors, typically students and newcomers, to work on open source projects under mentorship. It has introduced many people to sustained OSS contribution while giving projects structured seasonal support.

   In plain English: A program that pays people to contribute to open source projects with mentorship.

   Example: "The project’s plugin system matured quickly after two strong Google Summer of Code contributors kept working on it beyond the program."
