Definitions

  1. A developer who works on both frontend and backend code. Whether 'full stack' means 'competent in both' or 'mediocre at everything' is an active debate. Some job postings use it to mean 'we want two engineers for the price of one.'

    In plain English: A developer who can build both the user-facing part of an application and the behind-the-scenes server logic.

  2. The modern full-stack has expanded far beyond HTML/CSS/JS + a backend language. It now includes: frontend frameworks, API design, databases, containerization, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and sometimes mobile. Whether one person can genuinely master all of this is increasingly questionable.

    Example: 'The job posting says full-stack but the requirements include React, Node, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS. That's not a full-stack developer, that's a department.'
