  1. The ability to recognize, interpret, and manage emotions in yourself and others, especially in communication and conflict. In engineering culture emotional intelligence is often undervalued until teams realize that many technical problems are coordination problems in disguise.

    Example: "His emotional intelligence showed most during incidents, when he could calm the room without minimizing the seriousness of the problem."
