Dark Data

Definitions

1. Data that an organization collects, stores, or generates but does not actively use, understand, or manage well. In data culture dark data is often seen as both wasted opportunity and hidden risk, especially when it contains sensitive information.

   In plain English: Data an organization has but is not really using or managing.

   Example: "The audit found terabytes of dark data sitting in old storage buckets that nobody owned and nobody could confidently classify."
