  1. A security event that actually threatens or impacts the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of systems or data and therefore requires formal response. Not every alert is a cyber incident, but every confirmed breach, disruptive attack, or major compromise is.

    In plain English: A security event serious enough to require an organized response.

    Example: "Once the attacker touched production credentials, the alert was escalated to a cyber incident."
