Definitions

1. A protocol that uses cryptographic operations to achieve goals such as confidentiality, authentication, key exchange, or integrity. Even strong primitives can fail if the surrounding cryptographic protocol is poorly designed.

   In plain English: A security protocol that uses cryptography to protect communication or identity.

   Example: "The researchers broke the custom cryptographic protocol even though its individual primitives were standard."
