Definitions

1. A formal algorithm used for encryption, hashing, digital signatures, key agreement, or related cryptographic purposes. Security depends not only on choosing a sound cryptographic algorithm but also on using it correctly in a secure protocol and implementation.

   In plain English: A mathematical method used for encryption, signatures, hashing, or other security functions.
