A representation of the future of a computation at a given point — essentially, what the program will do next. First-class continuations (as in Scheme's call/cc) allow capturing and resuming execution state, enabling advanced control flow like coroutines, exceptions, and backtracking.
In plain English: A saved snapshot of where a program is and what it was about to do next, which you can jump back to later like a bookmark.
